Nasolabial folds — the creases running from the sides of the nose down to the corners of the mouth — are one of the first things people point to in the mirror. They're also one of the areas where the obvious solution is usually the wrong one.
Why the folds appear
Everyone has nasolabial folds. They are a normal anatomical feature and they exist in babies. What changes with age is their depth, and the cause is usually not the fold itself. As the cheek loses volume and the supporting fat pads descend, the tissue above the fold sags downward and deepens the crease. The line is the symptom; the loss of midface support is the cause.
The mistake: filling the line
Injecting a large amount of filler directly into a deep fold seems logical, but it often produces a heavy, shelf-like result around the mouth without addressing why the fold got deeper. It can also make the lower face look fuller in a way that reads as unnatural.
Treating the fold without treating the cheek is like propping up a sagging shelf instead of fixing the bracket.
What tends to work better
- [1]Restoring midface support first. Placing filler in the cheek to rebuild lost volume lifts the tissue above the fold and softens the crease indirectly.
- [2]Treating the fold conservatively, if at all. Once support is restored, far less product is needed in the fold itself — sometimes none.
- [3]Skin quality treatments. For fine, superficial creasing rather than deep folds, skin boosters or collagen stimulation can be more appropriate than volume.
- [4]Accepting some fold is normal. The aim is softening, not erasure. A face with no nasolabial definition at all does not look younger — it looks filled.
What results look like
Realistically, expect the fold to soften rather than disappear, with results lasting up to around twelve months. Our before and after gallery shows real nasolabial results from the clinic so you can judge for yourself what a natural outcome looks like.
Getting assessed properly
Because the right treatment depends on why your folds have deepened, this is an area where a proper assessment matters more than a price list. At your consultation we look at the midface as a whole and tell you honestly whether filling the fold is the right approach for your face — including when the answer is that it isn't.
