It's the question we're asked more than any other at consultation, and the honest answer is: it depends. Most people see their lip filler results last somewhere between nine and twelve months. But that range is wide for a reason, and understanding why helps you plan — and budget — properly.
What the filler is actually doing
Lip fillers use hyaluronic acid, a substance your body already produces and already knows how to break down. That's what makes it both safe and temporary. From the day it's placed, your body begins gradually metabolising it. The gel doesn't vanish overnight — it softens and reduces slowly, which is why most people notice their lips looking gradually less full rather than suddenly different.
What makes results last longer or shorter
- [1]Your metabolism. A faster metabolism breaks filler down faster. This is the single biggest factor and it's largely out of your control.
- [2]How much was placed. A 0.5ml treatment will naturally fade sooner than 1ml, simply because there is less product.
- [3]The area treated. Lips move constantly — talking, eating, smiling. That movement metabolises filler faster than in a still area like the chin or tear trough.
- [4]Whether it's your first treatment. First-time results often seem to fade faster. Subsequent treatments frequently last longer as a base is established.
- [5]Lifestyle. Regular intense exercise, smoking and significant sun exposure all tend to shorten how long results hold.
The first two weeks are not your result
This matters more than most people realise. Immediately after treatment your lips will be swollen — sometimes noticeably. That swelling is not your result. Filler settles over roughly two weeks, and only then are you seeing the true outcome. We always ask clients to wait the full two weeks before judging their lips or booking a top-up.
If you're unhappy on day three, wait. Almost every concern at day three has resolved itself by day fourteen.
Should you top up before it fully disappears?
Generally, yes. Topping up while a little product remains usually means you need less to achieve the same result, and it avoids the cycle of going back to baseline and rebuilding from scratch. For most clients that means returning somewhere around the six to nine month mark, though we'll advise you based on what we actually see.
A note on going too far
Repeated over-filling stretches the tissue and produces the heavy, unnatural look that most people say they want to avoid. A good practitioner will sometimes tell you that you don't need more product — and that's the practitioner you want. If your lips have been overfilled, hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved, and we offer that too.
The short version
Expect nine to twelve months, judge your result at two weeks rather than two days, and plan a top-up before it disappears entirely. Every treatment at ART FACE starts with a consultation, where we'll give you a realistic timeline for your lips specifically rather than a number from a brochure.
